What do you think is the best terminology to use after an incident?
- Bounce Back
- Bounce Forward
- Find your ‘New Normal’
- Something else?
Here is some feedback on the above question from BCP Builder Community on LinkedIn:
New Normal
- “The new normal” speaks volumes especially if it was a very severe incident that occurred.
- Not every incident is a disaster of course, some simply mean getting back to old normal then reviewing preventative and responsive controls to strengthen resilience. Which becomes the new but hardly recognizable new normal. Business Continuity works for any interruption not just disaster.
- I like “the new normal”. Also how about making sure it does not happen again!
- Welcome to your new way of working!
- I would always refer to this as Recovering to the New Normal.
- Recover your organisation and resume a version of normal operations first. Next, because Business Continuity is a cycle and a disruption is “a significant change” you should revisit your Business Impact Analysis and Risk and Threat Assessment. You will have a better set of data to create the new normal. No organization instantly starts a new normal.
- After a disaster, affected communities realize that things will never be the same. Old buildings are gone, roadways are not where they were, people are no longer available (in some cases because they have just moved on), etc. There will be a new normal and it will evolve for years.
Exiting or Reverting
- My viewpoint as a “provider” may be different to someone who is “embedded”. We tend to talk about “Exiting the Invoked state” or “reverting to a production environment” (production environment as in business processes). It’s a very good point that the normality may never be the same post “event”.
Lessons Learned
- Hold a Lessons Learned meeting and move into the improvement phase
Business as Usual
- Return to Business as Usual; the normal situation even if it is a different situation altogether to what it was earlier.
Bounce Back
- Don’t cause new problems while trying to fix an existing one. Bounce back, but take the opportunity to examine incremental upgrades while doing so.
